Tonight's reading starts us on our way to the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. As I was reading through it all I could hear in my head was the soliloquy that Linus did in Charlie Brown Christmas. "That's what Christmas is all about Charlie Brown."
Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” ~~Matthew 1:18-21
In those times, women could be stoned to death for becoming pregnant before they were married. Joseph, being the honest and faithful man he was, didn't want to have Mary have to go through any kind of hardship. He was willing to "do right" by her. He would marry her, then probably wait until the baby was born, then quietly divorce her.
God had other plans, however. This was no ordinary pregnancy. This would not be just any baby. This baby was going to be the SAVIOR of our world! That was a tremendous responsibility!
Think about how you would feel. Would you just say o.k. and not question what was asked of you? Think of the trust that Joseph put in God. Do you trust in God like Joseph did? Let us learn from Joseph's example. We should be able to trust in Christ the same way that Joseph trusted in God.
